Independent Dance Monday Night Improvisation classes

at Siobhan Davies Studios 85 St George's Road, London, SE1 6ER

Next class with Robert on 30.4.12

Robert’s classes explore the play between internal sourcing and external awareness while dancing in solo and with others. Arriving into sensation, gravity and the breath will be the preparation for opening movement into space and composition. Entering the ‘open score’ of group improvisation, we’ll practice shifting our attention between witnessing and action using both vision and touch. As we attune to the dance of the ensemble we’ll focus on how we support the space. Maybe less is more, stillness as valuable as movement.

weekly class in Islington is back for 2012 - Happy New Year!

playful physics
contact improvisation with Robert Anderson

A ten-week course to delve into the practice of contact improvisation. We will develop techniques to find a grounded, centred and articulate sense of solo movement that we can then take into duet. Meditative listening, and slow and sensual dancing will lead to safe, relaxed and playful flying and falling. Working with these skills we’ll consider how to extend the momentum of the duet form through space. We will lay the ground for our ability to be seen, to respond and initiate action - composing in the moment - by letting go of the barriers to our natural, playful, expressive selves. During the course we will explore some of the key principles of contact improvisation to develop a language that can be used for jamming. There will be a strong focus on exploration, improvisation and play. The classes are open for those new to contact and for experienced dancers who want to become more attuned to the subtleties of touch, direction and intention. There will be progression of material over the weeks so attending the full course is recommended. However, it is also possible to pay for 5 classes at a time and choose when to attend.

Contact improvisation is a dance of improvising and partnering based on the physics of touch, balance, weight, momentum, flow and resistance. It has been variously described as "an art sport", "a game with two winners" and "a physical conversation". Contact dances can range from the quietly meditative to the exuberantly acrobatic, from using little or light touch to sending weight through a partner's body to fly. It is a dance form that fine tunes your senses and wakes up your ability to listen and respond to what is happening in the moment.

In this workshop we will explore some of the key principles of contact improvisation (such as physical listening, spherical movement patterns and weight exchange) to develop a language that can be used for improvisation. After studying some simple techniques for safe and easeful movement we’ll have time for exploration, improvisation and play.

Playful Physics weekly class in London is back!!

playful physics
classes in contact improvisation with Robert Anderson

Ten classes offering skills and strategies to tap our body-mind’s appetite for movement and connection. Awakening our senses and reflexes to be able to orientate through spherical space. Developing clear connections within our body, outwards into space and with other bodies. Channelling the required energy and tone in the body to glide, fly and fall with a partner. Expanding our ability to be both soft and strong, supported and supportive, receptive and responsive. The technical studies are designed to support and expand the range of possibilities in our dancing so that we can invite pleasure, play and poetry into our improvisation. The classes are open for those new to contact and for experienced dancers who want to become more attuned to the subtleties of touch, direction and intention. There will be progression of material over the weeks so attending the full course is advised. However, it is also possible to pay for 5 classes at a time and choose when to attend.
